Every year I do a capsule wardrobe it just gets easier - maybe because I’m better at it … or because I’m more organized…or maybe the older I get the lazier I get! haha! Who knows?!?! The best thing about my capsule wardrobe is that everything fits and I genuinely LOVE everything I own! (Check out my previous capsule posts here and here.)
To do a capsule wardrobe well, I think a person needs to understand their style. I like a classic, tailored look with a modern edge. As much as I love boho/flowy things, I just don’t love them on me. Part of my growth has been letting go of looks that I see others rocking - just because it looks great on someone else doesn’t mean it’s going to be great on me. This means I try on lots of items and I follow these rules:
If I don’t want to wear it tomorrow, don’t buy it. I’ve been duped into buying things just because I needed retail therapy and then I only wear something once or twice. What a waste! Now the only time I break this rule is if I buy something off-season.
If I love it and it wears out, I replace it! See chambray shirt below.
If I find something that fits well and is the classic look I love, I buy it in multiple colors. Note I only do this for really classic pieces (see blazers) OR t-shirts that I will likely need replace every season because I wear them so much (see tops).
My favorite stores are J Crew Factory and Nordstrom Rack. I shop Nordstrom Rack in-person but I often buy things online when they don’t have it in my size in the store. In fact, I’m known to order items while I am actually in the store. J Crew Factory I almost exclusively shop online. I order WAY more than I keep and love trying things on in my home because then I can see what else I own and how a piece will compliment my wardrobe. This also saves me from purchasing duplicates!
My work environments are casual! I work a corporate job 3 days a week where jeans are totally the go-to. When I’m doing my business I’m mostly in jeans unless I am doing a workshop or meeting with a corporate client. Below you will find the pieces I’m in 98% of the time. Where I was able to add a link to a current item, I did! Click the pictures to go to the site (no, I’m not an ambassador..l just like to make it easy for people to find things! :))
Feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment if you have questions!
I tend to keep my tops pretty simple because I almost always wear a sweater or jacket over. I also have a bunch of costume jewelry and scarves so I always feel like I have options to make a basic piece look like a whole new outfit. They key here is everything fits like a dream and my best colors are represented.
SWEATERS AND JACKETS
I think a jacket/sweater really polishes off a look and these are absolutely part of my core attire. I normally buy a size down for a more tailored look and I ALWAYS wear them open. (That’s a trick I learned from Lindsey at Fashion Fix. When I get off course, she can help me get back to my core looks because she listens and understands how I like to look in my clothes.)
My jean game is WEAK right now! I still have a dark blue and black pair of AG Farrah High Rise Skinny jeans from a couple years ago. I am craving a dark, high-waisted skinny jeans and a great pair of skinny camo pants. I’m on the hunt!
I swear having great accessories has allowed me to live with fewer pieces of clothes! Here are the pieces I wear ALL. THE. TIME.
MAKE UP - THE ACCESSORY NOT TO FORGET!
If there is one thing I can take credit for make-up wise, it’s that I’m pretty consistent. Lipstick and a clean nail-polish help to complete my tailored look. Here are my favorites:
I love Athleta lined joggers in the winter. They are so warm!
I have an Old Navy fleece sweatshirt that I can’t get rid of. It is so not cute but it is my go-to on a cold day!
Workout: I love Zella from Nordstrom for pants. Old Navy active for tanks. I’m in need of a new workout jacket but for now I have one from TJ Maxx that I’ve been wearing for years and an old C9 one from Target.
I love Target for pajamas - the Stars Above brand is incredibly soft and I always buy separates because I like options.
I LIVE in robes. I feel like a woman who can pull off a great robe is a real “grown up”. :) Softies is my favorite brand and after work you’ll find me either in my Cloud robe or Marshmallow robe. After the shower the Turkish robe is my go-to. I am a “robe person” and I’m not afraid to admit it. ;)
I keep a Pinterest board wish list going, mainly for my hubby. You’d be shocked how many things I pin and then end up deleting at a later date because I just don’t want it anymore! I try to look once a month just to keep the board tidy. I also add non-clothing items like books, especially around my birthday or Christmas. This makes it so easy for him to shop and I’m always surprised to get the things I’ve had my eye on! Since I’m good at shopping for “workwear” I tend to pin more casual “mom” gear in my wish list. I need a cute new pair of sneakers so let me know if you’ve got a go-to!
